Following last year’s Listen Up Philip, which screened in the Main Slate of the 52nd New York Film Festival, writer-director Alex Ross Perry teamed up once again with lead actress Elisabeth Moss for Queen of Earth. The film has garnered critical praise since its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, in particular for Moss’s bravura performance. Stephanie Zacharek of the Village Voice wrote: “Almost everything she is feeling can be read in Moss’s eyes: Unnervingly matte or shining with blank, eerie joy, they’re the windows to a soul that’s clearly coming apart at the seams… With Queen of Earth, Perry gives Moss the vehicle he clearly saw she deserved.”
Our Deputy Director Eugene Hernandez sat down with Alex Ross Perry and Elisabeth Moss earlier this week to talk about the film. The conversation also touched on B movies, sound design, Skype auditions, and how Perry was influenced by several films he saw here at the Film Society like Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, which screened on 16mm in our Scary Movies series, and two from last year’s Rainer Werner Fassbinder retrospective.
