Earlier this week, we announced James Gray’s The Lost City of Z as the Closing Night selection of the 54th New York Film Festival. So for this special From the Archives episode of our podcast, we’re featuring a conversation between Gray and the Film Society’s Director of Programming Dennis Lim from 2014.
Gray’s last film, The Immigrant, starred Marion Cotillard as a young Polish woman coming to America in the 1920s. In addition to Cotillard, who had to learn Polish for the film, the critically acclaimed drama featured performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner. The film had its New York premiere at the 51st New York Film Festival in 2013, where it was a critical favorite. Ben Sachs wrote in the Chicago Reader, “Beautifully shot, designed, and performed, this may well be Gray’s masterpiece.”
Gray joined us for one of our Free Talks, which are sponsored by HBO, on the occasion of the film’s theatrical release in the spring of 2014. Subscribe to The Close-Up on iTunes so you never miss an episode. If you like what you hear, leave us a review!
